This seminar examines the relation between trauma, repetition compulsion, and anxiety through Freud’s Beyond the Pleasure Principle. It asks why the subject may return to painful experiences that cannot be explained by the pursuit of pleasure or easily integrated into a coherent account of the past. Particular attention will be given to traumatic dreams, repetition in play and relationships, and Freud’s question of how the psyche attempts to bind an excess of excitation. The seminar will explore repetition not simply as a return to what has been forgotten, but as a process through which the subject encounters the limits of psychic mastery and the persistence of an experience that has not yet been worked through.

Misha Patunas is a Serbian practising psychoanalyst and a member of the School of the Freudian Letter since 2015, serving as its President since June 2026. In addition to his psychoanalytic practice, his research interests include dream analysis and the examination of the theories and concepts introduced into psychoanalysis by Petros Patounas.
