The uncanny emerges when something that should have remained familiar, hidden, or repressed suddenly returns. Anxiety may appear precisely at the moment when the subject encounters something that is strangely familiar but cannot be comfortably recognised as their own. This seminar will examine the relationship between repression, the uncanny, repetition, and anxiety, drawing on the Freudian question of what returns despite the subject’s conscious wish to keep it away. Particular attention will be given to how apparently external events, relationships, symptoms, or encounters can awaken something already at work within the subject. The return of the repressed will therefore be approached not simply as the return of a forgotten memory, but as the return of something that continues to insist.

Petros Patounas is a psychoanalyst and a founding member of the School of the Freudian Letter, where he participates in the ongoing work of psychoanalytic formation, transmission, seminars, Cartels, and clinical inquiry. His work is situated within the Freudian and Lacanian orientation of psychoanalysis, with particular attention to the questions of desire, the analytic Act, the Breath, the Alien, the Verbeing, and the position of the analyst. In his teaching and presentations, he approaches psychoanalytic concepts not simply as theoretical material but as questions that emerge from clinical practice and from the subject’s encounter with what cannot be fully known or mastered. His seminars seek to maintain a close relation between the conceptual developments of Freud and Lacan and the concrete experience of analytic work, encouraging participants to question, articulate, and work through the problems that psychoanalysis continues to pose.
