This seminar explores Freud’s concept of the uncanny (das Unheimliche) as an experience in which the familiar, domestic, and everyday suddenly acquire a strange and unsettling quality. Drawing on Freud’s discussion of the double, repetition, the gaze, the doll, and the uncertain boundary between the animate and the inanimate, the presentation examines how anxiety can emerge when ordinary reality loses its sense of familiarity. Rather than treating the uncanny simply as an encounter with the unknown, the seminar will consider how the familiar itself can become disturbing, producing a moment in which the subject can no longer feel entirely at home in what once seemed recognisable.

Misha Patunas is a Serbian practising psychoanalyst and a member of the School of the Freudian Letter since 2015, serving as its President since June 2026. In addition to his psychoanalytic practice, his research interests include dream analysis and the examination of the theories and concepts introduced into psychoanalysis by Petros Patounas
