Lacan said that anxiety is not without an object[1], implicitly reminding us of Freud, who, in his essay Inhibitions, Symptoms and Anxiety, although speaking of indefiniteness and lack of object in anxiety, states in the immediately preceding sentence that “it is anxiety about something”.[2]

Lacan thus assigns the object of anxiety a peculiar place in discourse: its presence is connoted, yet it appears as something that resists symbolization and therefore cannot be named. The object of anxiety therefore appears as something that can neither be found nor lost.

This talk explores the encounter with the unnamable object as the point at which anxiety emerges, examining the insistence of loss and the desire at stake.
